Doctor Laura Taylor, MD, medical director of the USC Gender-Affirming Care Program at Keck Medicine of USC

Dr. Taylor is the medical director of the USC Gender-Affirming Care Program at Keck Medicine of USC, offering expert, compassionate care to the LGBTQ+ community.

Here’s what you won’t find on her resume.

Her childhood career goals were rooted in veterinary medicine.

“When I was growing up, I wanted to be a marine biologist or veterinarian. In high school, I shadowed a vet, but I nearly passed out while watching her do a dog’s teeth cleaning. After that experience, and after realizing I could make a bigger impact in human medicine, I landed on being a doctor.”

In her free time, she enjoys adventures with her family.

“When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife, two kids and our dog. We love getting away from the city and hiking, biking and camping.”

Exploring the great outdoors is close to her heart.

“Three of the items on my personal bucket list are visiting all the national parks in the U.S., going on a safari and backpacking part of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which spans from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington.”

Providing medical care for the LGBTQ+ community is deeply rewarding.

I love developing relationships with my patients. I particularly love caring for members of the LGBTQ+ community and having patients feel comfortable knowing that their physician is understanding of their specific needs, supportive and non-judgmental.

“In providing gender-affirming care, it is a privilege to be a part of my patients’ journeys to becoming their most authentic, comfortable selves. I am also passionate about providing reproductive, sexual and gynecologic care in a positive environment that allows my patients to have knowledge and agency in their health care.”

She provides comprehensive family planning and gynecologic care.

“I also have a clinical interest in providing gynecologic and reproductive health care. I enjoy the satisfaction of helping people understand their bodies and take control of their reproductive lives through trauma-informed health care, gynecologic screenings, as well as counseling regarding contraception, family building and menopause.”

Her patients are her greatest inspiration.

I am inspired to be the best physician possible by the stories and appreciation of my patients, many of whom have struggled to find spaces where they can receive high-quality, knowledgeable health care that affirms their identities and relationships.”

Empathy is key to her philosophy of care.

“I want to offer my patients excellent medical care, while helping them feel safe and supported every step of their journey. Being empathetic and calming is how I would describe my bedside manner.”

She believes in the importance of education.

One of the reasons I chose to practice at Keck Medicine is because it’s an academic medical center, which means that I am able to care for patients and also play a role in teaching the next generation of medical students and residents.”

Keck Medicine is home because of its commitment to excellence.

I am thankful to be working at Keck Medicine with other passionate health care professionals who are helping to create a place for all patients to receive equitable, high-quality care. My patients can easily see specialists and receive comprehensive care within our larger health system.”

Keck Medicine is dedicated to exceptional gender-affirming care.

Keck Medicine brings together doctors and clinicians who are leaders, innovators and teachers in a wide spectrum of specialties. Our team at the USC Gender-Affirming Care Program integrates gender-affirming primary care with hormone care, preventive care, sexual health care and more, all in the same place. We coordinate with other subspecialists in surgery, speech therapy, physical therapy and more — all within our larger multidisciplinary program of providers.

“This allows our patients to easily access all the services they need with providers who can communicate and coordinate their care. Our mission is to provide world-class care for transgender, non-binary, gender diverse and LGBTQ+ patients in a compassionate and equitable environment.”
