Dr. Abreu is a urologic surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC, who specializes in minimally invasive surgery and urologic oncology.
Here’s what you won’t find on his resume.
He’s inspired by the hero’s journey.
“I never had a person or role model that I followed, but I have always sought inspiration in stories of simple, humble people, who have excelled and thrived in their lives.”
He’s an equestrian.
“I used to ride horses. Horses are beautiful, strong, smart, friendly and reliable animals. If properly trained, they can do incredible tasks. One of the best things I have done in my free time is feeling free and at peace, while riding horses on the beach.”
Brazil is where his heart is.
“Brazil is such a magical place. My grandfather was born there, and I go as often as I can. When I’m there, I’m able to refresh, reflect and recharge.”
His bucket list involves his children.
“I have yet to raise my kids. I want to make sure they are good people, who become happy and accomplished. I’m also still looking forward to providing charity to those in need.”
He’s always been drawn to science, as a humanitarian.
“When I was younger, I wanted to be a scientist, because I wanted to discover something meaningful that could change and improve people’s lives.”
He’s motivated to ensure the highest quality of life for his patients.
“What continues to inspire me to be the best physician every day is the ability to constantly learn and thrive. The most rewarding part of my job is the satisfaction I get when I apply my expertise and deliver a great service to my patient that ultimately improves their life. “
Basic sciences shape his profession.
“Basic sciences — like mathematics, physics and chemistry — are the most important courses of study, when it comes to the development of technology. Their evolution has such a huge impact on the world of medicine. With robotics and the development of new technologies, the most influential advancement in the field of urology is for surgery to be as minimally invasive as possible.“
