A Keck Medicine of USC cardiologist encourages patients to communicate openly with their doctor.

Oana Maria Penciu, MD, is a cardiologist with the USC Cardiac and Vascular Institute, part of Keck Medicine of USC. She discusses how doctors and patients can communicate if a patient feels unhappy with the outcome of their treatment or their recovery.

Think of your physician as a partner in your care. Ask questions, make sure you understand the answers and don’t hesitate to ask for clarification.

If your recovery or treatment outcome isn’t what you hoped, talk openly with your care team. Share how you’re feeling, explain your expectations and ask why results may differ.

Discuss next steps together, including options, alternatives or adjustments to treatment.

This is an ongoing conversation and a long-term relationship. Trust and mutual respect are key to a good outcome.
