A Minimally Invasive, State-of-the-Art Alternative to Open Surgery

Interventional radiology offers advanced, minimally invasive approaches to diagnosing and treating a wide range of health conditions; often eliminating the need for open surgery.

Our board-certified interventional radiologists at Keck Medicine of USC combine technical expertise, comprehensive clinical care, and a strong commitment to research and innovation to deliver the most advanced, personalized treatments. These image-guided procedures are designed to maximize effectiveness while minimizing pain, reducing risk, and supporting a faster recovery; helping you return to your daily life sooner.

What Is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional radiology provides a highly advanced, minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery for many patients. These procedures are designed to reduce pain, shorten hospital stays, accelerate recovery, and lower the risk of complications; helping patients return to their daily lives more quickly.

Instead of open surgery, interventional radiologists perform treatments through a small incision using specialized instruments such as thin, flexible catheters. Guided by real-time imaging, including ultrasound, fluoroscopy (x-ray), or computed tomography (CT), these procedures allow for exceptional precision, effectiveness, and safety.

Interventional radiology can address a wide range of conditions across nearly every organ. Treatments may involve targeting tumors, controlling bleeding, restoring blood flow, or removing blood clots.

At Keck Medicine of USC, interventional radiologists combine advanced imaging expertise with individualized care to develop highly tailored treatment plans. As leaders in clinical research and innovation, the team is actively advancing new techniques and technologies to improve patient outcomes. They work collaboratively with specialists across disciplines and are frequently consulted for complex cases in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
