Benjamin Y. Xu , MD
Benjamin Y. Xu, MD, PhD, is an internationally recognized ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract care at the USC Roski Eye Institute. He serves as Chief of the Glaucoma Service, Glaucoma Fellowship Director, and Director of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
Dr. Xu is an expert in medical, laser, and surgical treatments for glaucoma. His clinical interests include early detection and treatment of glaucoma, narrow drainage angles and angle-closure glaucoma, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and cataract surgery. He emphasizes patient education and works closely with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that preserves vision and supports quality of life.
Dr. Xu has been recognized for excellence in patient care by Los Angeles Magazine and Pasadena Magazine and named among Newsweek’s America’s Best Eye Doctors. He has also been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor.
Dr. Xu is also an internationally recognized glaucoma researcher. He leads a research program focused on preventing vision loss and improving access to eye care. His team combines advanced eye imaging, artificial intelligence, and teleophthalmology to improve glaucoma screening, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly in underserved communities. His research is supported by the National Institutes of Health, Research to Prevent Blindness, and the BrightFocus Foundation.
Dr. Xu has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications and coauthored two books, including the World Glaucoma Association consensus on angle closure and a book on ocular imaging in glaucoma. He is regularly invited to speak at major ophthalmology meetings and academic institutions in the United States and abroad, sharing advances in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment. He is also dedicated to educating and mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists and researchers.
Outside of work, Dr. Xu enjoys hiking, cooking, gardening, and spending time with his wife and two daughters. He loves traveling, exploring new places, and trying foods from around the world. A violinist since childhood, he also enjoys sharing his love of classical music with his family.
