USC Arcadia Hospital (USC-AH) has expanded its surgical services with the opening of a new 12-bed surgical recovery unit designed to support patients awakening from anesthesia after procedures. The unit opened for patients in March 2026.

The post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) will enhance patient safety and comfort during one of the most critical phases of surgical care through specialized monitoring tools and dedicated clinical teams equipped to care for patients with complex medical conditions.

The PACU construction was funded by a $7.5 million gift from the Charles Huang Foundation.

“This significant gift from the Charles Huang Foundation supports USC Arcadia Hospital’s continued commitment to meeting the growing health care needs of the San Gabriel Valley,” said Ikenna (Ike) Mmeje, MHSA, president and CEO of USC-AH. “We look forward to continuing to elevate our high-quality medical care from diagnosis through surgical intervention and beyond.”

This gift is also being used to help build a hybrid operating room, an advanced suite currently under construction that will leverage image-guided interventional capabilities to support complex multidisciplinary surgeries, including cardiac and vascular procedures.

“We want to do all in our power to help expand needed health care services at the local level,” said Dr. Charles Huang, who has lived in Arcadia for over 20 years. “With this new center, the hospital will further distinguish itself as a center of excellence and serve our local communities more efficiently and effectively.”

The new unit also improves efficiencies between the operating room and post-surgical care teams to support patient recovery.

“We are proud to strengthen our ability to provide advanced, efficient and attentive post-surgical care for our local community thanks to The Charles Huang Foundation, and Dr. Charles Huang,” said Sandra Chen Lau, president of the USC-AH Foundation. “The PACU allows us to further our vision of offering world-class care close to home.”
