USC Arcadia Hospital to honor Midgley Foundation for healthcare support 

USC Arcadia Hospital leadership and staff celebrate a gift to the hospital from The Midgley Foundation alongside Board Chair Alan Whitman and Board Member Amy Whitman Richardson.

USC Arcadia Hospital’s (USC-AH) Foundation will honor the Midgley Foundation for its philanthropic leadership and generosity at its annual Crystal Ball gala in October. 

The Midgley Foundation has been a longtime supporter of the Arcadia-based hospital, providing significant philanthropic support of nursing excellence and the hospital’s journey toward Magnet recognition, with plans to apply by 2028. Magnet recognition represents the gold standard for nursing excellence and professional practice from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Midgley Foundation’s support also includes funding of advanced imaging equipment. 

The Midgley Foundation was established by Stanley and Constance Midgley, both longtime residents of La Cañada Flintridge. Although trained as a chemist, Stanley was a successful travelogue filmmaker and lecturer with a keen interest in special places, traveling in all 50 states and Canada. He made over 4,000 public appearances and showed his entertaining films more than 400 times on television between 1946 and 1992.  

Constance was a supervising nurse in Great Britain during World War II and believed that nursing was as key to the health of patients as any other aspect of healthcare. Their passion for special places and healthy communities is carried on by the Midgley Foundation. 

“The Midgleys were humble people with a commitment to conserving and preserving life, which underpins the foundation’s dual focus on land conservation and healthcare,” said Alan Whitman, board chair of the Pasadena-based funder. “They loved the outdoors and believed in healthy communities and understood the importance of preserving both.” 

Also serving on the Midgley Foundation board are Amy Richardson, Eric Lax and Spencer Walch.  

The Midgley Foundation will be honored at this year’s 37^th annual Crystal Ball, the USC-AH Foundation’s signature fundraising event. The gala will be held on the evening of Oct. 3 at the Langham Huntington in Pasadena. Last year’s event raised over $1 million in support of advanced technology and surgical services. 

“The Midgley Foundation has been a stalwart supporter of our hospital for years — their generosity has been crucial to our growth and success, both for cutting-edge technology and our nursing program. It is fitting that we are showing our gratitude and honoring them at our gala this year,” said Sandra Chen Lau, president of the USC-AH Foundation. 

USC-AH is a full-service hospital that, for the fourth consecutive year, has been honored by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the “great community hospitals” in the nation. This year, it was recognized as a High Performing hospital, the highest distinction awarded, for seven procedures and conditions by U.S. News & World Report. 

Since 1903, USC-AH has been a cornerstone of its community. Founded by the Women’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Church in 1903, the hospital was built on a vision of compassionate care. USC-AH has always had a significant impact on its community, providing much-needed healthcare to patients of all ages across a wide range of services.  

Since becoming part of Keck Medicine in 2022, the hospital has made significant advances and added key services and disciplines, with access to world-class specialists, cutting-edge technology and advanced care.
