Telehealth appointments are available.
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a common heart rhythm condition that can raise the risk of stroke. In people with AFib, blood clots can form in a small pouch in the heart called the left atrial appendage. Left atrial appendage occlusion is an arrhythmia treatment that closes off the area to help prevent blood clots and reduce stroke risk. It may be an option for people who can’t take long-term blood thinners. For some patients, this procedure offers an alternative to blood thinners for AFib and expands AFib treatment options.
At Keck Medicine of USC, our specialists regularly perform left atrial appendage occlusion as part of comprehensive heart care. You are supported by a coordinated team from cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery, anesthesia and critical care. Together, we create a personalized treatment plan based on your condition, overall health and goals.
Left atrial appendage occlusion is usually performed using a minimally invasive approach. This minimally invasive heart procedure uses a thin, flexible tube guided through a blood vessel to reach the heart. Then the specialist places a small device to seal off the left atrial appendage and prevent blood clots from forming there.
You will receive anesthesia, and your care team will closely monitor you throughout your procedure. By closing off the source of most AFib-related clots, this treatment can help lower stroke risk. And many patients won’t need long-term blood thinners.
Most people recover quickly after the procedure. You may stay in the hospital overnight so your care team can check your heart rhythm and overall condition. Mild soreness or bruising at the catheter site is common and usually improves within a few days.
Before you go home, your care team will talk with you about medications and activity guidelines. You’ll also have regular check-ins so we can monitor your heart and ensure the procedure is working well. Our goal is to support a smooth recovery and help you get back to daily life with more peace of mind.
