Get Advanced Ear Infection and Cholesteatoma Surgery Expertise

Tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy is a combined procedure that repairs a damaged eardrum or hearing-related bones and clears out the mastoid space behind your eardrum. This surgery treats chronic otitis media (ongoing or frequent middle ear infections) and cholesteatoma (a cyst behind the eardrum).

This procedure requires advanced expertise and skill to repair delicate ear structures and preserve hearing. Our fellowship-trained surgeons are nationally recognized experts in their field, often sought out for their capabilities and experience. It’s comforting to know you’re receiving care from a team known for successful outcomes.

What Are Tympanoplasty and Mastoidectomy Ear Infection Surgeries?

Tympanoplasty or mastoidectomy can be done as a single surgery, but they are often combined.

  • Tympanoplasty – Repairs a ruptured eardrum or reconstructs bones involved in hearing. Surgeons use a small piece of tissue from another area of your body, called a graft, to repair your eardrum.
  • Mastoidectomy – Removes damaged bone or removes an area of bone that’s blocking access to a diseased area. Surgeons use various approaches, depending on the extent of ear damage.

Tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy is often done as an outpatient procedure, but some people need to stay overnight in the hospital. Recovery after surgery usually takes one to two weeks.

What Is the Goal of Ear Infection and Cholesteatoma Surgery?

Doctors use this surgery to remove the infection and prevent middle ear infections or hearing problems from developing in the future. This surgery is also done to improve hearing.

Tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy offers promising results in most instances. The procedure often requires follow-up surgery six to 18 months after the first procedure to ensure your ear is healthy and infection-free.

We make your experience as smooth and worry-free as possible. Our surgeons, audiologists (hearing experts), speech-language therapists and nurses work together to keep you well-informed and supported every step of the way.
