Age-related hearing loss most often affects people 65 and older. It’s a form of sensorineural hearing loss — or nerve-related hearing loss — caused by inner ear problems. A family history of hearing loss, diabetes or high blood pressure can increase your risk of hearing loss as you age. 

The main symptom is loss of hearing, but other signs include: 

• Difficulty understanding conversations in loud environments, such as restaurants or other public places 
• Problems hearing high-pitched sounds, such as cell phone tones, or women’s or children’s voices  
• Tinnitus (constant ringing or chirping sounds) in one or both ears
