Achilles Tendon Rupture

The Achilles tendon is the tough, sinuous band that connects the calf muscles to the heel. Overstretching or sudden injury can cause the tendon to tear or rupture. A ruptured Achilles tendon can be treated either non-operatively in a cast or a boot or with a surgical repair. The decision is usually influenced by the overall health, age and activity level of the patient.

What are the signs and symptoms of an achilles tendon rupture?

  • Chronic and acute pain in the foot, ankle or along the back of the leg
  • Restricted use or inability to stand on your toes or bend your foot to walk
  • Swelling in and around the heel
