What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is one of the most well-studied and effective weight-loss operations. Your surgeon creates a small, egg-sized pouch at the top of your stomach and connects it directly to the small intestine. Food then bypasses the rest of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. The rest of your stomach stays in place but no longer receives food.

How Gastric Bypass Works

Gastric bypass helps you lose weight in three ways. The small pouch holds much less food, so you feel full quickly. Bypassing part of the small intestine means your body absorbs fewer calories. And changes in gut hormones reduce hunger and improve how your body regulates blood sugar, which is why many patients see improvement in type 2 diabetes soon after surgery.

We perform gastric bypass laparoscopically or robotically through several small incisions. Compared with open surgery, most patients have less pain, minimal scarring and a faster recovery.

Is Gastric Bypass Right for You?

You may be a candidate for bariatric surgery if you have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 30 or higher with type 2 diabetes or other obesity-related conditions. Gastric bypass is often recommended for people with type 2 diabetes, severe acid reflux (GERD) or a higher BMI. Your care team will help you compare bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and other options based on your health and goals. Insurance requirements vary.

After gastric bypass, you’ll take vitamin and mineral supplements for life and follow specific nutrition guidelines. Our dietitians will prepare you before surgery and support you afterward.
