About Jacques Van Dam, MD

Dr. Van Dam is a board-certified gastroenterologist who specializes in advanced/interventional endoscopy. Dr. Van Dam specializes in diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal cancers and their precursors such as Barrett’s esophagus, colonic polyps, and pancreatic cystic neoplasms. Dr. Van Dam obtained his MD, PhD from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in gastroenterology at Harvard Medical School and went on to receive specialized training in therapeutic endoscopy at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Van Dam performs such procedures as ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), EUS (endoscopic ultrasound), EMR (endoscopic mucosal resection), and SBE/DBE (single- and double-balloon enteroscopy). Dr. Van Dam is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians (ACP), the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). Dr. Van Dam is past president of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the Southern California Society of Gastroenterology (SCSG), and the Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology (BISG). Dr. Van Dam is the recipient of the AMA Inspirational Physician Award (American Medical Association), ASGE Distinguished Service Award, the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Award for Translational Research, and was recently elected to the National Academy of Inventors by USC’s Steven’s Institute for Innovation.

Dr. Van Dam specializes in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal cancers such as pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma), and colon cancer. Dr. Van Dam also specializes in the diagnosis and management of benign pancreaticobiliary diseases such as retained common bile duct stones, acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cystic neoplasms, and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Dr. Van Dam’s current, IRB-approved, clinical investigation is focused on the minimally invasive screening for esophageal diseases such as pre-cancerous Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal varices, a potentially lethal complication of advanced liver disease.
