Dr. Patel is a surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC, who specializes in breast reconstruction and lymphedema surgery.
Here’s what you won’t find on his resume.
His parents inspired him to pursue his career.
“I’ve wanted to be a doctor since a very young age. Both of my parents are physicians, and I looked up to them growing up. I was inspired to apply to medical school because I’ve always been drawn intellectually to the sciences, including anatomy and disease processes. It was a natural fit for me.”
Activities with the family keep him going.
“When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our daughter. I also enjoy outdoor activities, such as golf and tennis. One day, I hope to play a round of golf at Pebble Beach.”
A tennis legend is his inspiration.
“If I could trade careers with anyone, it would be Roger Federer. He’s a class act, on and off the court. He’s simply amazing to watch, even at the tail end of his career.”
He used to call Taiwan home.
“My favorite travel destinations are Hong Kong and other parts of East Asia. I lived in Taipei for one year, during my fellowship, and truly loved the experience.”
He takes his work seriously.
“The most rewarding part of my job is being able to offer treatments to patients who would otherwise have no options for their condition. I’m inspired to innovate and challenge myself to provide the latest treatment options and solutions for my patients today and for the ones I will see tomorrow. Refinements in surgical techniques have allowed surgeons in my field to offer solutions to problems with minimal morbidity and maximized patient satisfaction.”
The future holds much advancement.
“Technology has helped my job tremendously. Imaging in surgery helps guide surgical dissection and the way I am able to provide treatments to patients. I currently do clinical research involving breast reconstruction outcomes and lymphedema surgery outcomes and techniques. I believe immunotolerance will happen within my lifetime. Achieving this will allow for transplantation without medications to prevent rejection.”
Working at Keck Medicine allows him to lead the next generation.
Academic medicine allows me to be involved in the teaching and education of future surgeons in my field. Also, it allows me to tackle challenging and unique conditions all the time. Our group of plastic surgeons offers highly specialized care for the treatment of nearly every single condition within breast surgery, extremity surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and lymphedema surgery, amongst others.
