About this doctor:

Osamu Ukimura, MD, PhD is an internationally recognized expert in image-guided surgery and minimally invasive therapy for prostate and kidney cancer. He also is one of the world’s most experienced urologists in transrectal ultrasonography for diagnosis, staging, prostate biopsy and management of prostate cancer. Recently, using computer-assisted MRI/US fusion guided targeting system and real-time 3D ultrasound mapping technique of prostate cancer, he developed a new frontier of prostate biopsy strategy and novel therapeutic option of targeted focal therapy of prostate cancer. From 1996 to1998, he was assistant professor for The Prostate Cancer Screening and Staging Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center, The University of Texas. Dr. Ukimura’s innovative, pioneering work includes novel surgical technique for image-guided energy-free nerve-sparing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, during appointment at Glickman Urological Institute, The Cleveland Clinic from 2003 to 2006. He is also internationally recognized for his experience in management of lower urinary tract dysfunction and laparoscopic surgery.

Dr. Ukimura pioneered the world’s first application of computer-aided image-navigation system in urology, including augmented reality, image-fusion of 3-dimensional ultrasound with CT or MRI and 4-dimensional navigation technologies. He has received many national and international awards for his research and has been an invited faculty member to many meetings worldwide. He is an invited reviewer to many national and international journals. Dr. Ukimura has over 170 papers in peer-reviewed literature and has edited a book of Interventional Ultrasonography in Urology.
