Acquisition broadens the range of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery expertise accessible for Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge-area patients
Keck Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) today announced that the esteemed Demeter, Hubanks and Stoneman Otolaryngology Practice has joined the university-based healthcare practice, and will now be known as USC Otolaryngology Associates. Recognized nationally as one of the leading university-based research departments in its field, the USC Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery brings comprehensive, world-class care to the communities of La Cañada Flintridge and Glendale through the joining of this practice.
The Glendale practice was founded by John R. Hubanks, MD, in 1971, with Milan J. Demeter, MD, joining in 1979 and currently serving as its chief physician. George B. Stoneman, MD, joined in 2010 and now all three physicians are part of Keck Medicine of USC’s medical group. This acquisition allows the local practice to expand services at its two existing locations, where clinical teams have been treating adult and pediatric patients for many years. They will now be joined by USC expert physicians and audiologists to deliver the best in patient care, including Karla O’Dell, MD, a fellowship-trained laryngologist specializing in voice, airway and swallowing disorders, and treating all diseases of the ears, nose and throat.
“My colleagues and I are thrilled to join forces with USC because it means our patients have access to the most advanced care and cutting-edge procedures,” said Milan J. Demeter, MD. “Keck Medicine of USC is recognized around the world for its clinical expertise and innovative research in the treatment of the ear, nose, throat, and diseases of the head and neck. Everything we do is about enhancing the care we’re able to give our patients, and this partnership is a big advantage for those we serve.”
“Keck Medicine of USC is becoming the practice of choice for physicians in Southern California who want to align their practices with the research and clinical expertise that a leading university-based medical center offers,” said Amar A. Desai, MD, MPH, and CEO of USC Care & Ambulatory Services, part of Keck Medicine of USC. “We partner with working physicians who are already well-established in their communities and work collaboratively with these excellent physician practices to make advanced care more accessible within their communities.”
In 2014, the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC received $3.25 million of $85 million in National Institute of Health (NIH) awards targeted to clinical otolaryngology departments across the country, vaulting the department to No. 10 of NIH-funded programs, surpassing the likes of Harvard University, New York University and the University of California, San Francisco.
This latest acquisition continues to fuel Keck Medicine of USC’s growth in Southern California, especially in the San Gabriel and San Fernando communities. Other recent acquisitions include USC Verdugo Hills Hospital in 2013 and physician practices in Glendale, Bakersfield and Orange County in 2014, and a joint venture for outpatient surgery with Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA) in 2014.
